Xbox Series X Backwards Compatibility Detailed

A new post on Xbox Wire has released more information regarding the next generation backwards compatibility of the upcoming Xbox Series X.

Jason Ronald, Director of Program Management for Xbox Series X, stated the importance of players preserving their gaming legacy. The team originally released Xbox 360 compatibility for the Xbox One in 2015, and Ronald stated that he continues to bring this commitment to the next generation.

He mentioned that the same team behind the backwards compatibility of the Xbox One will also lead the initiative with the Xbox Series X. In order to achieve this goal, more than 100,000 hours of play testing have already been completed across thousands of different games. These titles are already playable on Xbox Series X as of today, and range from major blockbusters to cult classics to even fan favorites. By the time the system launches this holiday season, a collective 200,000 hours of play testing will have been done.

Note that backwards compatible games will run natively on the Xbox Series X hardware, and will use the full power of the CPU, GPU and the SSD of the system. There will be no boost mode and no downclocking, which will ensure that titles will see higher and more steady framerates, maximum resolutions, and even reductions in in-game load times.

Also included in this backwards compatibility is a new HDR reconstruction technique. Designed by the Xbox Advanced Technology Group, this mode will enable the Xbox Series X to automatically add HDR support to Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles, all with zero impact to performance.

Finally, the Quick Resume feature will let players jump back in right where they left off across multiple titles. This feature has been designed at the platform level, and does not require any additional work from title developers.
